5.0 out of 5 stars Subterranean, 20 Aug 2003
By costas georgiou (london United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Ray French's novel is an endearing and humourous evocation of the subterranean world of childhood and how this fragile world, built on betrayal and trust, can collapse.

4.0 out of 5 stars enchanting, 30 Aug 2003
By A Customer
A compelling novel. Written with such detail and lively dialogue as to allow the reader to very vividly imagine the context in which it is set. Having achieved this, the complex relationships of a child with his family and peers are brought to life. Full of intrigue and often dark humour, I this book very satisfying and would highly recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars The drama of being a child, 25 Aug 2003
By Mike Hayes (Southall,England) - See all my reviews
This story is painful and hilarious and I couldn't stop reading it. Its a highly original and imaginative account of a child of Irish parents growing up in South Wales in the cold war era and it describes with compassion and sensitivity the poor communication in his family and his bullying of his younger brother. Liam is torn between conflicting ideologies and loyalties. There are wonderfully comic scenes, in school assemblies where a tiny island of catholics struggle to define themselves in a sea of dissent, on the allotment where his father stockpiles food in the event of a communist takeover, on the terraces where the local football team dismally reflect local aspirations, as the plot leads on to its tragic climax.
