4.0 out of 5 stars A very clear well laid-out book., 25 April 2001
By A Customer
I found the explanations in this book very clear. There are lots of fully worked examples that students should find easy to follow and which can be used as models for the problems in the exercises. While there are books which present the material in a more exciting fashion, few are as clear as this one and I did not find more errors in this text than in many others. There is perhaps a shortage of challenging problems but this book is a sound introduction to Decision Mathematics - past exam papers and other sources can be used to supplement the exercises. There is an updated version of this book available now which contains some useful (and lengthy!) review exercises. The content has changed somewhat however so which book to buy depends upon the syllabus to be covered.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for the independant learner., 12 Oct 2000
By sachin_vara@yahoo.com (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This book offers great insight into the world of Decision Maths, a branch of maths that teachs a different way of thinking as compared to Pure Maths, though Pure too is recommended to grasp some areas of decision maths.

The Edexcel board has been run through this book, so every thing that can come up in the exam should be in this book.

Another great fact is the examination questions as the end of the book; this is 99% similar to how the exam paper questions are constructed.

All I can say is that this book is a worthy investment.

1.0 out of 5 stars Do not rely on this textbook, 7 Nov 2004
I unfortunatly had to use this textbook for my AS level maths course- I wish I didn't. Much of it is incomprehensible and I learnt very little from it. The explanations of the basic topics are passable, and you may even understand it after the 5th read through, but the more complex topics are so poorly explained that you need someone or something else to gain any understanding- the long rambling section on the Simplex method will induce tears of pain and leave you understanding very little, other than the true worth of this book- very little. The hand-shaking theorem, although a basic concept, is explained so poorly as to leave your mind numbed and for you to have learnt nothing.

There are two advantages to this textbook:
1) It does have many exercises and exam style questions, like the others in the Heinneman series
2) It's quite short, and so is welcomingly over and done with quickly.

I did worst on the Decision module of my AS Maths, supposedly the "nicest" and "easiest" of the modules, and I fear that some of the blame must fall on this trully unintelligible book.

They say decision maths is only for people who have a knack for programming. Well, I'm not one of them but this book certainly puts you on a level playing field. Read more
