5.0 out of 5 stars A great childrens book, 9 Jan 2003
I read this book many times between the ages of 8 and 11, and it has stayed with me for the rest of my life.
The story is about a young boy who runs away, and also a female Cheetah that escapes from a wildlife park. The chapters follow the stories of both of them, and their paths cross a few times throughout the book. It is a beautifully written book, with strong imagery, and a real sense of danger and longing. I also read a few of Victor Cannings other books, that follow on from this one, and I would also recommend them. I will be buying this book so that my son can enjoy it too.

5.0 out of 5 stars A thrilling and moving story for all children of school age, 25 Jun 1999
By A Customer
The Runaways is an absorbing tale of Smiler,a young boy and Yarra,a cheetah. Both runaways, their stories inter-twine in a delightfully written book that will captivate and thrill children of school age.I was read this story first in Primary Seven and it was the only time the whole class was rapt with attention all day!The adventures continue in The Flight of the Grey Goose and Painted Tent. These stories are gems,Don't miss them!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story for kids of all ages, 13 April 2007
I found this trilogy when I was at the hard to please stage between children's books and grown up writing. The boundaries have blurred since then, with many great children's writers dealing with more adult and slightly scary themes. But at the time the `Smiler' trilogy - of which this was the first - were a real find. Smiler has been wrongly convicted of a theft, and runs away to find his dad, who he believes is the only one that can help him. I was fascinated by the description of how he continues to evade the authorities, disguise himself, and obtain work to maintain himself on the run. His story becomes entwined for a while with that of a cheetah, who has also escaped from captivity. My favourite of the three books was the second, `The Flight of the Grey Goose', which carries on exactly where this one leaves off, but this one is excellent
