4.0 out of 5 stars Poignant and Memorable, 26 April 2006
By Tara Gilmartin (Derry, NI) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
My daughter and I read this one together as a bedtime book, and from the first chapter it hooked both of us. There's an inevitability to the tone and prose that signalled that the story wouldn't end well, but we were drawn on regardless.

Sutcliff deviates slightly from some accepted elements of the story in this retelling, but only to the good of the story and not in any way that changes it markedly from the tale at its root.

On reading the last page I had tears in my voice (my daughter thought I was cracked), and even a year on each tiny plot twist is alive for both of us.

Maybe not entirely suitable for a pre-teen; it prompted a number of frank discussions with my 8-year-old on the moral correctness of seducing one's uncle's wife, regardless of any true love involved!

A beloved, favourite story.

5.0 out of 5 stars a beautiful but heartbreaking love story, 11 Jan 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Tristan & Iseult (Hardcover)
This story has a vibrance and insight typical of Rosemary Sutcliff's work. It is the legend of the forbidden lovers Tristan and Iseult, told in a very believalbe version which totally draws you in. It is not long but by the last line of the story I had tears in my eyes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't let the recent film version put you off!
This is a very special book for me. I first read it at school in a dark and dusty classroom and it transported me to the sea-swept shores of Cornwall. Read more
