4.0 out of 5 stars I loved this book! Powerful, evocative, great story, 27 Feb 2004
By Martin Turner "Martin Turner" (Marlcliff, Warwickshire, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
Viking Dawn is a powerful, evocative children's historical novel about a boy who joins a Viking ship to go raiding down the coasts of England and Ireland. Told without judgment, and seen entirely from within its own time, it is a riveting adventure story that opens our eyes to a world once all-important but now long forgotten.

Treece has worked hard to get the atmosphere and the historical details exactly right, which means that this book is hugely educational without ever feeling like it is.

Many of the details are hinted at but not explained, exactly matching the child's eye picture of the hero. This makes Viking Dawn rewarding to re-read. I encountered it first when I was eight, as a book read aloud in school. I carried on re-reading well into my teens.

If you enjoy this book, you should enjoy even more the sequel, The Road to Miklagard, which takes up the story years later and broadens the picture of the Viking world. The third part of the story, Viking Sunset, is a more thoughtful tale for a slightly older audience.

This book is an ideal companion to a visit to the Jorvik centre in York. You may also like Roger Lancelyn Green's book 'Myths of the Norsemen'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Viking's Dawn, 11 Mar 2004

I've loved this book since I was a child, and recently lost my copy. It was great to see it here and complete my set again!

This is an ideal introduction to both the works of Henry Treece and to his saga of the Vikings. I'm glad to see that my 9 year old son is enjoying it as much as I did at his age, and that I have yet again found a book for his father to enjoy at bedtime story time as much as his listener.

Yes, my son DOES read for himself, but betime story with Dad is special!

5.0 out of 5 stars The first part of the saga, 15 Sep 2005

This review is from: Viking's Dawn (Hardcover)
I first read these books when I was in Primary school and the stirring passion of Treece's writing made a lasting impression on me. This book, the first in the trilogy, would nowadays be seen as a coming of age story. As a child I was struck by how different the life of a Norse child was to my own; it was a harsh life in a harsh climate. As an adult I am more impressed by the empathy that Treece had for this era and his even-handed approach to the religious and political divisions of that time. Certain fantasy writers I can think of allowed their own religion to cloud their judgement; Treece did not make that mistake. Yes, by today's standards the books glorify battle and bloodshed, but a trilogy about the Viking age cannot be expected to be anything else.
