I loved this book! Powerful, evocative, great story, 27 Feb 2004
Viking Dawn is a powerful, evocative children's historical novel about a boy who joins a Viking ship to go raiding down the coasts of England and Ireland. Told without judgment, and seen entirely from within its own time, it is a riveting adventure story that opens our eyes to a world once all-important but now long forgotten.Treece has worked hard to get the atmosphere and the historical details exactly right, which means that this book is hugely educational without ever feeling like it is. Many of the details are hinted at but not explained, exactly matching the child's eye picture of the hero. This makes Viking Dawn rewarding to re-read. I encountered it first when I was eight, as a book read aloud in school. I carried on re-reading well into my teens. If you enjoy this book, you should enjoy even more the sequel, The Road to Miklagard, which takes up the story years later and broadens the picture of the Viking world. The third part of the story, Viking Sunset, is a more thoughtful tale for a slightly older audience. This book is an ideal companion to a visit to the Jorvik centre in York. You may also like Roger Lancelyn Green's book 'Myths of the Norsemen'.
