About the Author

Nevil Shute Norway worked as an aeronautical engineer at Vickers before setting up his own airship company. He served in both world wars and was a commander in the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve in World War II, working on secret projects. He flew his own aircraft to Australia to research On the Beach, before settling there permanently. His books are based on his own wartime and aircraft industry experiences. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This is one of my favourite Nevil Shute stories; it has humour,romance,suspense and excitement,and it really holds your interest.Mona,a barmaid,is going out with Jerry Chambers,an RAF pilot,who apparently sinks a British sub by mistake,as evidenced by the British seaman's clothing found floating near the scene.Jerry has to become a test pilot instead,testing a very experimental new bomb. Mona,meanwhile, overhears new evidence that could clear Jerry,not realising that he may not live to see his name cleared... What will happen? Read the book and find out!

A good read and an interesting story, but it doesn't grab me the way that some other Nevil Shute books do. I would class it as workmanlike rather than inspired.
