5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best revision guides I own!, 21 May 2004
By A Customer
I bought this off of the 'buy new' section of amazon and was pleasently suprised when it arrived the very morning after i had ordered it the afternoon before.

I realised that it would probably be a good idea to buy this as i had a few missing case studies in my original notes.

I would recommend this to any student studying Geog specification C. Not only does it give you handy tips to get better grades when answering exam questions but it gives detailed case studies and sample GCSE questions at the end of every theme.

It is set out into 4 chapters and these are the set themes for your examination;physical systems and environments, natural hazards and people, economic systems and development and population and settlement. Another thing that is good is in the introduction, it tells you exactly what the format of your exam will be so you know what to expect if you've forgotten what it was like in your mocks.

One thing that i was disappointed in at the first look was the black and white format - however this shouldn't be a problem, i didn't find it so, though some people may find it too boring to revise from.

It also gives you tips on the DME exam though wasn't of any help to me as i had already taken mine before i had bought the guide. However, will be extremely useful to those preparing for that too.

All key ideas are noted at the top for the last minuite revison and all vocab is listed with the definitions too.

Overall a thoroughly brilliant revision aid and i definitly feel more confident about going into my exam in two weeks time!

5.0 out of 5 stars Rounded, concise, thorough - just good!, 20 Jun 2002
By A Customer
This is easily the most rounded GCSE Geography guide I have seen, perhaps even GCSE guide full-stop.

It has case studies integrated into general knowledge work, both of which are very important for the exam. Rather than discussing events or processes in only general terms, you are presented with case studies: in-depth enough to get marks without useless space-filling, time-consuming drivel.

It is also very useful to have model answers based around your own case studies (for the most part), whereas in other books the model answers can be more generic and thus it can sometimes be difficult to apply "their" model answers to your own situation. Also the fact that model answers are provided at all is, obviously, very helpful.

It also extends itself to the DME, which is very useful; ideally, then the book should be bought fairly early, since the DME is some months before the final. There is even a small section on Map work, a full-colour Ordinance Survey which links to some of the Questions papers provided*, as well as a useful "glossary" of Geographical terms you may come across.

*There aren't full exams, but there is at least one exam section (a 20 mark bit) after each of the five sections in the book: some sections end with both a higher and a foundation paper.

One thing it does not go into is coursework; although this is understandable since there is too large a variation of them for the book to give any really useful, and specific advice, short of doing every possible coursework, which isn't really plausible. Also coursework generally allows you to gain more help from teachers etc. so the guide does not really have to cover it.

Personally I would say it is slightly too "dangerous" to rely solely on the book, but as a revision guide I have seen few better, especially considering it is far cheaper than most. I found it very helpful in all areas of revision - something I found lacking in other guides.

So in summary, buy this book at almost any costs, and buy it early! - That Liz Hattersley is/was a teacher shows in the book.

Five Stars.
