Think of any movie, which includes a sword fight over the last thirty years and William Hobbs, will probably be the man behind it. In his book Fight Direction he gives the reader a taste of how to choreograph stage and screen duels. But Fight Direction is more than a "how to" book. It is packed full of amusing anecdotes of situations and the behaviour of various actors while staging duels. Hobbs discusses the history of the theatrical duel from the Victorian hit the sword style to his own groundbreaking methods. He also analyses what makes a good duel, which is far more complex than people think. Roman Polanski and the late Lord Olivier who catalogues a list of injuries he received in fight scenes write the forward. Anyone interested fight direction or film theory this book is a must. Even if you are not this book is an excellent read.

I am a fencer with only a passing interest in stage fighting. I bought this book out of idle curiosity. Love it. It's like being allowed backstage. So that's how they do it - wow!
