Product Description

Mary Panton walls up her desires in a beautiful villa high up in the hills above Florence, as she calmly contemplates her disastrous marriage. She turns for help to the notorious Rowley Flint, and through him comes to realise that to deny love, with all its passions and risks, is to deny life itself. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another great Somerset Maughn quick read, 20 April 2009
By Mrs. Elinor Nash "Anywhere But Here" (Bath, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book has an unexpected (and nightmarish) scene in the middle which alters what you might be expecting to happen. What I love about Somerset Maughn is the way he writes male characters, and the three in here are great. Although sparcely described, the feel you get for the places and characters is acute. If you want a good story, but don't have much time to read, this is ideal.

5.0 out of 5 stars You can not leave it before you finish reading..., 20 Nov 2008
This is really a marvelous novel. Very well structured. I have read it in its French translation and I offered some copies to my friends. Then I was thinking that it is a good novel for an adaptation into film. And once in walking in the Saone river sides (Lyon, France) I saw the poster of a cinematographic adaptation of it... Can it be as good as the novel itself?

If you start to read it you won't leave it until you finish it. Try!
