Trapped there, in the damp, old house with the Martyns- Mrs. Martyn is a ravaged, aging actress, Fletcher revives the smarting recollections of his youthful failures and is for the first time ready to give up the protection they have afforded him- and move on.... Mrs. Manning is a cool and careful writer and if her novel is handicapped by a difficult theme and a difficult character- it is very well done. (Kirkus Reviews)
