Product Description

Review

`[Things I've Been Silent About] transports us to a world that is at once enchanting and threatening; it is a tale that mixes family feuds, politics and literature and holds our interest from the first to the last page ... a touching portrait of a troubled childhood in a family torn apart by a seductive father and an overbearing mother ... But as the narrative unfolds against a complex and at times tragic political background, it is a political statement on Iran's modern history as much as a personal attempt to come to terms with a past by unravelling its secrets.' --Financial Times

Review

`A beautiful and sensitive book ... [Nafisi's] belief in the power of culture to transform lives and societies is inspiring.'

4.0 out of 5 stars Memories of Iran and of a Mother difficult to live with, 25 Jun 2009
By Thelma Batchelor (Surrey, U.K.) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Having read "Reading Lolita in Tehran" a year or so ago, it was not difficult to decide to read this latest book from the author, Azar Nafisi.

It was easy to read and difficult to put down. Any memories these days of earlier times in Iran are of interest to somebody who has little knowledge of the country other than what is heard on the news currently.

Iran is a beautiful country, full of beautiful literature and poetry. What has happened to it over the past century is distressing, to say the least.

The book tells lovingly of her homeland in Iran, and of her family; more especially of her father and her brother. Her relationship with a powerful and headstrong mother was far from easy. With her mother there were a number of difficulties which affected not only the author but also other close family members.

The book spans a number of periods of change leading up to the Islamic Revolution in 1979. Living conditions being very difficult in Iran, the author has spent many years in the United States with her husband and children.

Some beautiful memories here ... how one wishes that one day soon Iran will regain the glory that could be hers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Transparency, 9 May 2009
By J. Panahy "Jane Panahy" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a book of remarkable transparency written by a distinguished Iranian woman who has been buffeted both by momentous changes in her country and by the circumstances of her upbringing by an unstable mother.
It is written with great candour and honesty and is a book which is impossible to put down.
