5.0 out of 5 stars Just as good as the rest, 31 Jan 2003
Kathy Reichs writes another amazing book.
Its fast paced and quick moving and she definitely keeps you on your toes with storylines!

Dr Tempe Brennan is in Guatemala trying to uncover the bodies of many women and children dumped years ago in a mass grave. As usual something else always crops up and Tempe begins to get entwined in another case. Four girls, one an embassadors daughter, are missing and Tempe has to dig a body out of a septic tank. This scene is so well written!

As well as the trials and tribulations of the cases she is on we begin to see more of Tempes personal issues and thoughts coming through in this book. Another love interest appears and as usual Detective Ryan is still on the scene.

This is defintely worth a read and i will be pre-ordering the next installment!

5.0 out of 5 stars Tremendous, 23 Jan 2003
If you only buy one book this year make it this one!

This is the latest book in the series based on the adventure which is Temperance Brennan's life. She is in Guatemala helping to unearth the atrocities inflicted on the Guatemalan people at the beginning of the 1980's, working in mass graves, trying to give a sense of closure to those family members who survived. It is not long before she is asked to advise on an ongoing case, in Guatemala City, of missing young women. The story is fast paced and always exciting with twists and turns you wouldn't expect.

The on going flirtation between Temperance and Detective Andrew Ryan continues despite their distance and just when you think they might get it together something happens to throw a spanner in the works. Enter Ryan's counterpart in Guatemala who also has a thing for Tempe. Watch the testosterone and lust unfold.

Corruption, missing girls, money and lots of bones make this story one that is difficult to put down. Perhaps the best offering yet from Kathy Reichs whose ability to invoke emotion and suspense is displayed perfectly in this book. The only criticism I may have was that at times it got a bit technical but it was information you needed to understand the evidence that was discovered. You see that through out the book she develops, to an extent, a relationship and a responsibility to the dead she has to study. She makes you aware of the importance of life and raises the profile of unthinkable crimes that have happened in the world around us.

A really amazing book - I really couldn't put it down and would advise you to read this as soon as you can!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent addition to the Tempe Brennan saga, 4 Mar 2003

Highly recommended.
Sometimes, the later books in a series about one character can disappoint in some way but this is not the case with Grave Secrets. All the favourite settings are here with something a little bit different with the location change to Guatemala. The pace is exciting without being too light on detail and the more techy bits about mitochondrial DNA may need reading a couple of times but come in handy for pub quizzes!
Ms Reichs wonderful narrative ability is as vivid as ever and the plot is realistic and twisty enough to keep you guessing.
Despite this book being fiction, I found it interesting from a factual point of view as I knew nothing about Guatemala or the crimes committed there before.
Less psychological than Minette Walters, more enjoyable than later Patricia Cornwell, anyone who finds forensics fascinating will love all of Ms Reich's books.
I just wish she'd get it together with Ryan and stop messing about!
