5.0 out of 5 stars Some of the best short stories you will read, 1 Sep 2007

John Harvey's Resnick novels have garnered much praise, so it's strange to say the least that he isn't perhaps as well-known as the likes of Ian Rankin et all. Thankfully that may change has Harvey has notched up a major Crime Writers Award (CWA) award in recent times - but ironically not for a Resnick novel.

Now's The Time contains all the Resnick short stories, and gives the reader the opportunity to know more about some of the minor characters that populated the novels. What's really impressive is the way that Harvey takes the short story format and makes them all compelling, entertaining and satisfying. Unlike many novelists whose efforts at short stories seem somewhat disappointing - Harvey's are fantastic. Maybe it has something to do with also being a poet - but there are no wasted words here; and every story is worth reading. A fine collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars I really enjoyed this novel by John Harvey, 4 Jul 2004
By A Customer
I really enjoyed this novel by John Harvey. I thought the novel had a quick pace and once I started to read the book my imagination kicked in.

Living near Nottingham I could identify some of the places that were mentioned in the book, e.g. Victoria Centre and the Forest Recreation Ground.

As I was reading the book I tried to imagine what Charlie Resnick looked like, if you have read some of the earlier novels featuring Resnick you will know that he does not suffer fools gladly and really gets into the investigation.

I like the character Millington, I imagine him to be a big man, no nonsense and one who prides on his appearance.

I would have liked to have seen a bit of romance in Resnick's life, having read the earlier novels I always thought that Resnick and the character Lynn Kellogg would have made a good match, they seemed to 'gel' well I thought.

What I have to remember though is this a work of fiction and sometimes when reading one tends to forget this and think the characters are real.

If you haven't read any Resnick novels before, I can tell you that you are in for a good read and I think John Harvey is a very good writer.

5.0 out of 5 stars John Harvey's Resnick, 23 Feb 2009
By Mrs. J. Hall (Coventry, England) - See all my reviews

Resnick is a detective with faults we can all recognise but above all you know he is honest and depite set backs he will continue doing what hes best at.. detecting. \i have every one of the Resnick novels and can reccomend them to anyone. The story line is not predictable so that one has to keep reading until the book is finished,
