Product Description

Product Description
The gripping new medieval Scottish mystery from the leading author of the genre Margaret Kerr of Perth is living in Edinburgh with her uncle Murdoch during the summer of 1297. She'd come to search for her long-absent husband who is in the service of Robert the Bruce. Margaret herself is still loyal to the deposed King John Balliol. Then terrifying raids and a brutal murder on the Kerr property bring the wrath of the English down on the heads of Margaret and her uncle. The sudden reappearance of Roger, her husband, gives Margaret the chance for escape from Edinburgh and together they make for Perth. But soon she begins to suspect that Roger's newfound enthusiasm for their marriage is just a foil for a mission for Robert the Bruce. Then her father returns from Bruges, bringing trouble and discord in his wake. What was it the raiders sought from Margaret's property? Can she trust either her husband or her father...?

About the Author
Candace Robb has read and researched medieval history for many years, having studied for a Ph.D in Medieval and Anglo-Saxon Literature. She is also the author of seven Owen Archer novels.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Good read from Candace Robb, 18 Feb 2005
By J. Chippindale (England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
This review is from: The Fire in the Flint (Paperback)
The Fire in the Flint is as usual with Candace Robb a meticulously researched novel about the plotting and counter plotting that surrounds the claims for the throne of Scotland. Edward Longshanks has returned to England and left Scotland in turmoil.

These are the times of William Wallace and Robert the Bruce and Margaret Kerr of Perth is living with her uncle Murdoch, who owns an inn in Edinburgh. She has come to the city to seek news of her absent husband Roger. His allegiance seems to lie with Robert the Bruce, while Margaret's sympathies lie with the deposed King John Balliol.

These are dangerous times in Scotland, but particularly in Edinburgh where the castle is still garrisoned by English troops . . .

Candace Robb as always is a consummate story teller and the plot keep the reader happy throughout the book.

2.0 out of 5 stars A disappointing read, 26 Feb 2005
By A Customer
This review is from: The Fire in the Flint (Paperback)
Fans of Candace Robb's excellent Owen Archer mystery series are likely to be disappointed with the Margaret Kerr series, because for a start these are not really mysteries. Much like the first in this series "A Trust Betrayed", this book has little mystery in the storyline, the main character undertakes no detection or investigation to speak of, and the narration creates no suspense.
Lovers of historical novels may be sufficiently entertained by the period details and more realistic approach to the "Braveheart" figure of William Wallace and his contemporaries. But if, like me, you prefer your historical crime fiction to contain a entertaining *mix* of detective story and convincing historical background, this book is probably not for you.
I would advise to wait patiently for the 9th Owen Archer book "The Guilt of Innocents", which will apparently be published in April 2006 in the UK. If that's too long a wait, you can always go and read the Owen Archer short story called "The Bone Jar" available on Candace Robb's official web page.
