4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent story from Masterson, as expected., 4 April 2004

I enjoyed the story very much. The only drawback I found was that it was set in Poland and I had to get used to the names of the Polish characters, which detracted a bit from reading as I tried to pronounce them in my head!! However, don't let that put you off, as the book was well worth getting over this hurdle, which is the only reason I rated the book with 4 stars instead of 5.

I loved the ending, especially the very last page - deliverance of justice is always sweet - just wish it could be more like that in real life!!

I'm glad that I read the Amazon reviews for Graham Masterson's books and decided to buy one (currently on my 6th), as I wanted a change from King and Koontz, but still wanted the horror theme and a book that I didn't want to put down until the end.... and then pick up another one with the same enthusiasm!

3.0 out of 5 stars Run-of-the-mill horror, 30 Jun 2005
By Peter Evans (Dollar, Clackmannanshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
My first encounter with Graham Masterton, and while the book is readable, as a horror story I didn't find it desperately convincing. Tends to get bogged down in the middle, and a shorter version would have been better. The Polish names are a distraction (at least for British readers) and the goodies rather disappointingly win in the end. Not enough suspense to keep me gripped and the blood and gore is overdone. The best is left till last as the book drives towards its conclusion in the sewers of Warsaw - but it takes a long time getting there. I'll probably try other Masterton titles in the hope of better fare for the imagination.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the best so far, 20 Nov 2003

Since starting out reading Graham Masterton books with The Chosen Child, and after now reading possibly 8 others so far, this is still the best one yet. From the very first chapter it sets you off on a very interesting subject, with lots of surprises. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Horrific human mutilation with a heart.
Graham Masterton is known for his graphic depictions of human suffering at the hands of all kinds of devils. This novel adresses the horror of war with a different twist. Read more
