3.0 out of 5 stars Being diplomatic..., 20 April 2006
Dave Stone is no Terrance Dicks; to be honest he's not even a Gareth Roberts. Sky Pirates was an ill-conceived mishmash of styles that I found almost impossible to read. To be fair, Death & Diplomacy is a vast improvement by dint of it actually having a story and coherent narrative - but only just. As the forty-ninth 'New Adventure' the author clearly feels radical developments are needed; notably Benny falling in love and getting engaged to space-bum Jason. Their tempestuous relationship is at the heart of the book whilst The Doctor attempts to broker peace between three galactic warrior races at the behest of the shadowy 'Hollow gods'. As so often, Roz and Cwej are spare parts and I cannot see their function or relevance as travelling companions - whether the much vaunted 'fiftieth novel' can reverse this remains to be seen.
Overall a solid yet insipid effort; readable but lacking in the dash and verve of some of it's more insdpired predecessors - and hopefully its successors...
