3.0 out of 5 stars Left disappointed, 17 Feb 2008

(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
Gavin McCain has no idea his real father isn't even human or the fact he is heir to the Fae throne. His mother has raised him with no knowledge of magic, yet his ignorance will not protect him from the harmful actions of his half-sister Elphina; a succubus intent on killing Gavin to assume their father's throne.

White Lady Nakkole, a Fae that protects a designated waterway from harm is tasked with not only informing Gavin of his parentage and powers but also ensuring he accepts his heritage before he is bought home to his father, King Arrane of the Fae. Considered to have some empathy towards humans, Nakkole gets everything wrong from the moment she meets Gavin; but not in a charming, amusing way the reader can enjoy. Instead I found her antics annoying as she initially proved herself pretty ineffectual amid a variety of life threatening situations involving Gavin and herself. She also didn't come across as having a great deal of self control; constantly acting against her internal dialogues that she shouldn't involve herself with royalty by promptly throwing herself at Gavin.

It's always a bad sign when I put a new book down after reading only several chapters and not pick it up again for several days. It's an even worse sign when the pattern again repeats itself and I find myself taking over a week to finish reading the book in question. I must say however that the story line in "Destiny's Warrior" certainly picked up its pace throughout the final few chapters as Gavin learns to utilise his magic and battles not only Elphina's quest for the throne, but also her plot to re-unite the parts of the Sphere of Life to release the Dark King from his imprisonment.

I cannot fault HW's world building; her in depth descriptions of a whole host of magical creatures and their individual magicks are certainly entertaining; however I found her plot far too slow moving for my tastes (hence the average star rating). Those readers looking for the sort of heart pounding, action packed read that keeps you rapidly turning pages should avoid disappointment and skip "Destiny's Warrior". I'd pass this book on to friends with a love of fantasy romance, but would be far from upset if it was never returned.
