3.0 out of 5 stars Ignore the cover. No, really. This book is so much better than the cover suggests!, 20 Mar 2009
By Angels Bright (Manchester) - See all my reviews
So I'm not normaly precious about the cover of novels. I mean, knowing people who work for publishing houses, I know that it isn't the most informed decision making process to decide what cover goes on a novel. Scarily the person making that decision often hasn't even read the book! However, this is one of those instances where I have to stand up and say - please, please, please ignore the cover of this book. The cover screams hideously appalling Mills and Boon at its worst (without any unintentional kitsch kudos to rescue it). But this book isn't that bad. Really. Please don't buy it just to burn it.
Now, hopefully having gotten you to a baseline of zero (I personally would have rated it minus 80 just on the cover), time to consider the novel itself.

If you're wanting cooly stylistic and elegant writing, with elaborate characters and deep storylines - then this novel is not for you. Go buy something else. If however, you're not that pretentious and do enjoy some harmless flirty romance every now and again (like the rest of the population do) then this is worth reading. I've liked the "midnight" books - or at least some of them. It is a different take on an ages old story and borrows from some more classic mythology which shows at least that Emma Holly is an author who bothers to build a background even when writing romance. I'm not saying this book is classic by any means, but for me it represents the difference between good romance and bad. Like the difference between a good movie with some pretty hot scenes and dodgy porn.
Harmless fun - enjoy.
