A truly passionate book, 23 Mar 2006
I have to admit that I have a small tendency to be blinded to a book's faults is the sex scenes are well-written, but hey, I'm that kind of person, so take my comments with a pinch of salt if you wish.'Passion' is a story of the spiritual and physical awakening of a young widow, a tortured hero's discovery of love, and the defeat of somebody eeevil (and I mean romance melodrama evil). Passion Elizabeth Dare has a chance meeting with a stranger (the initial premise for this novel was inspired by Madonna's 'Beautiful Stranger' song) in the Crystal Palace. And she sleeps with him, behind a screen in the gothic room. Yup, that's Chapter One. You might think, with an opening like this, that this book is just pornography-in-words. But truly, it isn't. The style is really quite unique, I found, particularly through the use of mirroring thoughts in scene transitions. The lack of flowery language and short sentences (and the use of rather more crude language for the sex scenes) all made for a very real and genuine-sounding tone and I think this contributed a lot to the emotional power of the book. And yes, there IS emotion. It isn't just sex! The book roughly splits into 2 halves: the first part is where Passion and Mark have sex all the time, but they don't really know who the other is (they decide to call each other by their first names). The second part starts from when Passion and Mark discover each other's identities, which immediately curtails their amorous activities, and they slowly and torturously move towards their HEA. It's the second half, really, that gets the waterworks going. What I particularly like about this book is its emotional and physical rawness and clarity. When Passion sees Mark dancing with another woman, she doesn't huff and walk away or merely feel angry, she feels sick and throws up. Nothing in this book is done in halves. It isn't simply 'I love you', it's 'I love you, I love you, I love you'. Admittedly, the book is fairly melodramatic, but I bought into it, and so did a fair number of people (it won quite a few awards at AAR's Annual Contest, including Most Luscious Love Story'). I recommend this book very highly. It was possibly my favourite book of 2005, and I read a lot of good books in 05! It was sexy, yet emotionally satisfying and stayed in my head for a very long time. A true Keeper!
