4.0 out of 5 stars Most enjoyable of the Fethering mysteries (so far...), 24 Feb 2003
By A Customer
Carole Seddon has recently become one of the trustees of the former house of (and now shrine and soon to be museum to) a minor English man of letters - at the request of the new Director - in order to swing power from the previous incumbent. Sheila Cartwright is the bossy and driven woman who first set up the museum, and she is shot dead one evening after the trustees meet; a meeting to discuss how they should cope with the unearthing of a skeleton in the kitchen garden of the house...

Carole and Jude are back (at last), and have wandered into Barbara Vine territory: extracts of old correspondences and the long shadows cast by sins. However, Simon Brett doesn't allow this to interfere with his trademark lighthearted style, and the (now seemingly) obligatory heroine-in-peril denoument.

The plotting has tightened up a little since 'Torso' and 'Downs', which is welcome, and Carole (and the reader) finally start to learn something of the history and inner life of Jude...

It may sound like I'm being picky but I still stayed up until 3:30 this morning finishing it! A good, entertaining mystery!

3.0 out of 5 stars Slow start to a workaday thriller, 6 Jan 2004
By A Customer
This book suffers from a very dull first couple of chapters, which aren't helped by taking place in the middle of a committee meeting in which nothing interesting happens. I didn't believe either in the very non-female relationship between Carole and Jude, and felt that the author was far happier in the company of his male characters.

The book only came to life, for me, with the introduction of Laurence, who is a fascinating figure and I only wish we'd had more of him. The relationship between Laurence and Jude is very effective, and only shows up the unfortunate dullness of Carole. Once Laurence arrived on the scene, the plot too improved, with the various mysteries coming together perfectly adequately (thus the 3 star rating - without the better middle of the book, this might have been a 2 star novel). However, this spurt of activity is let down by a rushed and too easy ending.

Not a work I'd recommend, I'm afraid.
