4.0 out of 5 stars Mrs Jeffries does it again, 10 May 2004

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Inspector Witherspoon of Scoltand Yard is a nice man, but not a particulary good detective. His devoted housekeeper, Mrs Jeffries, and the rest of his equally devoted staff, help him to solve his cases without him knowing it. Mrs Jeffries passes on the information gleaned through hints and suggestions, so the Inspector aways ends up thinking he's solved the crimes himself. Once you have accepted this wildly improbable premise, you can get on with enjoying the stories. In this one, a clergyman has been found shot dead outside a church, and the skeleton of a young woman is found up a chimney, can Mrs Jeffries and her fellow servants solve these mysteries? Of course they can. Mrs Goodge the cook, Betsy the maid, Wiggins the footman, and Smythe the coachman, who is secretly engaged to Betsy (why secretly? Search me), and Mrs Jeffries herself, are all likeable characters, and their delight whenever there is a murder for them to investigate is underestandable, it's a lot more fun than housework. My favourite characters are the feisty American widow Luty Belle Cruickshank, and her argumentative butler Hatchet, who help Mrs Jeffries and co. with their investigations. Suspend disbelief and just enjoy the latest episode in this fun series.
