It's always useful to an aspiring screenwriter to hear the success stories of others, and that is exactly what Whiteside's book offers. Even as a UK reader, I found the practical advice on routes into the industry and different careers available interesting and informative. Screenwriters often set their sights on working in one particular medium, whereas this book opens up and clarifies all the possibilities available; from job sectors to college courses. The screenwriting industry can often appear a mystery to a new writer but this book can help in forming more definate career decisions. First hand interviews and advice inspired me with confidence and enthusiasm. An essential guide to new US screenwriters.

This book doesn't get bogged down in the authors own ideas about careers. Instead, he offers insightful interviews with many people in the different screenwriting fields. Sitcoms, longform, and feature writing interviews convey the life and experiences of their respective areas and helps the reader decide if that is truly an area they want to enter. All the interviews suggests what avenues may give new writers the best start into that area.

Rich's insightful interviews with some of the leading creative forces in the entertainment industry reinforce the point that good writing alone is not enough. "The Screenwriting Life" is an indispensable guide to the political realities of Hollywood.
