5.0 out of 5 stars Three great Tintin adventures in one book, 18 Aug 2001
By Jeffrey Davis "jmd555555" (Sussex UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This collection contains two highly entertaining stories and one absolute classic, The Castafiore Emerald. It is not possible to give away the plot as nothing really happens and as a result of this there is a much greater emphasis on humour: for example the scenes involving Captain Haddock and Bianca Castafiore's parrot! I have always felt that the best moments in the Tintin books took place at Captain Haddocks ancestral home of Marlinspike Hall and in The Castafiore Emerald the whole story takes place at the Hall leading to many comic moments. The other two stories are the last Tintin adventures that Herge completed and while they are not as good as the other classics (The Calculus Affair, The Red Sea Sharks, Tintin in Tibet, the Seven Crystal Balls and Prisoners of The Sun) they are nevertheless most enjoyable although, it was a surprise, when these books first appeared in English in the late 1960's and early 70's, to see Tintin wearing a Ban The Bomb sticker on his motorcycle helmet and wearing flared jeans, rather than the usual plus fours! (in Tintin and the Picaros). The A5 format takes a bit of getting used to but these are entertaining adventures for children and adults, like myself, who have never quite grown up!

4.0 out of 5 stars Consistency throughout, 23 Feb 2004
This review is from: Tintin: America (Paperback)
Once again Herge has the familiar characters that we have come to love.
The pictures again tell more than the words themselves (probably due to the fact that Tintin is published in so many languages). You especially get drawn into Snowy's expressions.

The stories are very Tintin-esque with subterfuge, deceit and unparalleled escape from danger.

The only negative thing is that not one of these five books jumps out above any other Tintin Adventures. However, as I said, well worth a read especially for any collectors or Tintin fans.
