5.0 out of 5 stars Magic and science fiction at its best., 3 Aug 2002
This review is from: The Monster Garden (Paperback)
I read this wonderful book at as a child and have been haunted ever since by its brilliance. The sort of story, that will keep both child and adult spellbound in the world of vivid imagery it creates.

A girl feeling lost and isolated from her family and father makes a life changing discovery, when she creates the sort of friend we all dream of. Yet the wonder and magic of her situation, turns into a desperate battle of raw emotion as she struggles to grow up and find a way out for her creation and herself.

A bitter sweet story with real insight into a child's mind, that mixes real life emotion and reality with science fiction and magical wonder. It is the sort of secret miracle that the child in all of us wants to experience. Well worth a read.

4.0 out of 5 stars I read this book when I was 10, and have always had a copy.., 14 Feb 1999
By A Customer
This book is simply brilliant, from a childs perspective it is wonderous and graphic, rich in detail. In some ways its a little bit horrifying and scary but this is only once and adds to the overall effect of the book. Buy it for your kids, or for yourself, either way you'll love it. Vivien Alcock at her best.
