This is a short but extremely lucid book intended for students of Art and Literature. The meaning of the word 'Grotesque' has changed its meaning over time and Thomson briefly covers its use from Roman times to the present. Beginning with the Monstrous, and the change from Fantasy to Realism, and he goes on to its modern use as both Comic and Terrifying. He includes the ideas of others such as Kayser, Schlegel, and Ruskin, and finally gives his own comprehensive definition. There are no illustrations, which is a drawback for artistic readers, but there are short quotations from Shakespeare, Nonsense Rhymes, and other poetry to illustrate its meaning in the Absurd, Parody, Satire, and Irony. He ends with a discussion of the uses and purposes of the Grotesque.
