Product Description

Product Description

This volume provides both a technical, theoretical guide to advanced ethnography - focusing on such concepts as primary data collection and system relationships - and a practical guide for researchers interested in conducting actual studies. It illustrates developments in critical social theory and applies them to ethnographic analysis in a way which seeks to be accessible to all.

From the Back Cover

There is a veritable explosion of ethnographic research in education throughout the world today. Much of this is increasingly influenced by the perspectives of critical theory and cultural studies. However, there has until now been no coherent guide to the theoretical foundations and methodological procedures that make critical ethnography what it is, that both elaborates why one should do it and how one should do it. Critical Ethnography in Educational Research provides both a technical, theoretical guide to advanced ethnography--focusing on such concepts as primary data collection and system relationships--and a very practical guide for researchers interested in conducting actual studies.

Phil Carspecken is ideally suited to write such a volume, having engaged in a number of well known ethnographic studies himself. His approach to establishing a theoretical and practical guide draws on excellent sources which complement his own superb analytic and methodological knowledge. Furthermore, by grounding his discussions in actual examples taken from his and others' research, he is able to make complex issues much clearer than others are able to do.

Carspecken's work uncovers very exciting developments in critical social theory and applies them to ethnographic analysis in a way which distinctly contributes to the field--yet he does so in a manner which is accessible to all. This groundbreaking guide will prove an international success for a diverse range of readers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for critical researchers, 9 Sep 2009
By S. Fortune "moose" (Sunderland, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
For anyone underatking a critical research project at graduate or post-graduate level this is essential reading. Carspecken presents a structured methodological approach to conducting critical ethnography. The theoretical and philosophical issues underpinning the method are presented and the method itself can be directly applied to your own research study. Carspecken illustrates each stage of the ethnographic process with examples from his own research projects in the field of education. His analysis of the methodology is excellent is invaluable for referencing in your own thesis methodology. The whole book embraces the political and emancipatory aspect of critical ethnography as a force for social change. There are explanations of the genesis of critical ethnography and its roots in Marxism/Critical theory. My only reservation is the sometimes complex and esoteric tone of the book - it requires quite a high level of prior knowledge about qualitative research and sociological concepts. Not an easy read or a 'research by numbers' textbook - a challenging and provoking dialogue on critical research.
