Chapter 1 sets the scene for physical needs in child development, such as the need to be warm and safe. Chapters 2 to 9 cover the body systems:

  • skeletal
  • nervous
  • cardiovascular
  • respiratory
  • renal
  • digestive
  • reproductive
  • immune.

The embryology and physiological function at birth is explored in each chapter before the text moves on through the many changes over the next decade to puberty and the arrival at adult functioning. A new final chapter provides a holistic account of children’s development, body and mind. Each chapter is illustrated with line drawings and tables, and ends with scenarios which illustrate how knowledge supports good practice in a real-life situation, and a quiz to consolidate learning.

This is a very good all round text book, covering different aspects of childrens growth; includes various holistic needs, all systems, including skeletal, nervous and immune, routine tests and various illnesses/problems from embryo to adolescence. essential for child branch students.

This book is an helpfull supplementary book. However you need a basic anaotomy and physiology to accompany this book. It dicusses development of the foetus and how systems change at birth. It then goes on to discuss changes during the childs life.

An introduction to normal, healthy physical development for professionals who specialize in working with children. Janet McGregor, an experienced nurse teacher, guides the reader through the key changes in body systems and functions from birth through adolescence. Topics covered include: the skeletal system; the nervous system; the cardiovascular system; the respiratory system; the renal system; the digestive system; the reproduction system; the immune system; and co-ordination of the systems. Each chapter ends with a scenario which encourages the student to apply the information provided to real-life situations and a question designed to extend, through further reading, the students' knowledge and understanding of the specific system. This introductory text has been written for nurses following the child branch of the DipHE in Nursing, for student midwives, health visitors and school nurses, for nursery nurses, and any person caring for children who aims to promote their healthy development.
An invaluable book for the aspiring paediatric nurse.
