Product Description

Product Description

Why is 'identity' important - in people's lives and in the social sciences? How much control do we have over shaping our own identities? Are we more uncertain about our identities now than in the past? Questioning Identity: Gender, Class, Ethnicity provides an accessible exploration of identity as a contemporary concern in everyday life and as a key concept in the social sciences. The world in the twenty-first century may be an increasingly unstable place, but changes offer new opportunities as well as new challenges. Drawing on work from a number of different disciplines and focusing on the key social divisions of gender, class, 'race' and ethnicity, this book shows how these challenges and opportunities work out in people's lives. What is happening when people identify with particular definitions of themselves or strike out and forge new identities? Do gender, class and ethnicity offer some stability and even security about who we are, or are these structures constraints on our freedom to choose our own identities? How far is it possible to forge new identities in changing times? This key text will be essential reading for students starting out in the social sciences and for anyone with an interest in the dilemmas of identity in contemporary society.

From the Publisher

The social sciences are currently going through a period of acute upheaval as they struggle to come to terms with the pace of social change at the beginning of a new century. The five 2nd editions of the Routledge/Open University series Understanding Social Change form part of a bold and innovative educational project. Written in conjunction with the Open University foundation course in the social sciences, they offer students beginning study in this area access to fresh perspectives and new ways of explaining the changes they see around them every day.

Each book is designed to give the greatest possible support to students' learning - whether alone or in groups.

Key text features include:

* activities with comments
* short, stop and think questions
* marginal notes of key concepts
* reading extracts and newspaper extracts
* boxed case studies
* bullet point summaries
* annotated further reading
* photos, maps and cartoons. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

I used this in my dd100 open university social science course and found it clear, concise and very informative.

4.0 out of 5 stars Leading the way in introducing Open University course material, 17 Mar 2009
Well where shall I start? To get straight to the most important point, if you are studying DD100 this book is compulsory. Should you be looking to find out a little more about identity in the modern world, this book could be for you.

The book is very repetitive but I have found that this is useful in reminding myself (as being someone who hasn't studied for 5 years) the subjects that are covered in the material in the previous sections. Don't give this book a miss if you have no background knowledge of social sciences, as it will give you many ideas for further reading material and how to find those resources for the areas you are interested in.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great for social scientists, otherwise boring!, 5 Jul 2008
This is one of the books for DD100 understanding social change which is an open university level one course.

This book is great if you enjoy social science, it is clear and concise.

Personally, i found this book boring and not interesting in the slightest. It serves a purpose for giving you a head start in a variety of open university courses, but it is not a book i would ever recommend!
