4.0 out of 5 stars It used to be all Greek to me!, 19 Nov 2002
By A Customer
This was one of those language books that you open and think "I will never be able to cope with it". Now after a few weekly lessons and the aid of a native Greek to help with some of the more difficult aspects, the book is invaluable. For those serious about learning the language it has everything, and for Greek you have to be serious because it doesnt use the Latin alphabet. The way this book is structured, you have to learn the Hellenic alphabet before you can move on past the first chapter. Once you have mastered it, you can read and speak Greek, although a little more learning is required to be able to understand what you are saying/reading! This book doesnt rely on the traditional approach of "transliteration", so you get accustomed to the real language. I would recommend buying the tapes that accompany the book, especially if you dont have a teacher, pronounciation can take some getting used to. Try it, and make your future trips to this beautiful country more worthwhile.

3.0 out of 5 stars Adequate but not inspiring, 20 Jul 2001
By A Customer
This package is let down by the two introductory chapters and the poor layout and formatting in the rest of the book, but is otherwise competent and comprehensive. I found it not well suited to home study, however it may work better as part of a taught course.

The alphabet and pronunciation guide are unnecessarily spread over two chapters and some important yet simple issues are omitted. Also, much of the recorded material for these chapters is not in the book and, surprisingly, it does not contain a simple list of the letters read out in order.

It may be a personal quirk, but I found the use of a sans serif Greek font made it less readable, worsened by a seemingly illogical use of emboldening. Also, I disliked the format of the dialogues, which didn't identify the speakers and just indicated each new speech by a dash. The glossary uses the Times-style Greek font I prefer, however it has stylised versions of kappa and rho which don't match the alphabet guide. The welcome message, also in the Times font, was thus made unreadable when I first opened the book. Not a good start!

None of these issues are major flaws, they just make the task of learning Greek slightly harder than it need be. In comparison to other book / cassette packages the content and balance of theory and practice are good, albeit presented in a rather dry style. If you ignore that and can get started elsewhere, it's worthy of four stars.

(REAL NAME)
This is NOT a complete course - nor is it an audiobook!

It is only the audio to accompany the printed book available seperately!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Not What it says
This is not a looseleaf form of Ms Watts book - this is the ordinary paperback version slipcased with the audio material.
