Product Description

Review

'Still by far the best study of precisely the subject described by the title - the war effort ... there is not a better account of the way armies were mobilised and deployed, or the interface of Royalist administrative history and military history or of the internal politics of the royalist party and its military consequences.' - John Morrill, University of Cambridge

'Hutton's subject is the area which gave Charles I his most valuable support to that task he brings a thrilling intelligence, a powerful imagination and a bracing, epigrammatic prose.' - London Review of Books

Product Description

In this reissue of the second edition, Ronald Hutton places his vivid account of the Royalist War effort in modern historical context, bringing the reader up to date with recent developments in the study of the English Civil War.

5.0 out of 5 stars The definitive study of how the Royalists waged war, 26 Feb 2002
A remarkably thorough examination of the means by which the Royalists developed and sustained their military machine during the First Civil War, with emphasis on the Welsh Marches and West Midlands but covering the entire conflict. Goes much further than most military histories to explaining both how and why they lost.
