Product Description

Product Description

Produced as part of a government funded project, this book will be a practical but research-based guide for all those in higher and further education who wish to use computers to assess their students' learning.

From the Back Cover

The rapid development and integration of computer-assisted assessment (CAA) in mainstream post-compulsory educational institutions today make this an exciting and invaluable reference text. It provides a practical, research-based guide on a subject that is becoming increasingly important as educational assessment expands.
The book addresses both theory and practice offering a comprehensive evaluation of many
key aspects of CAA such as:
* Question and test design, scoring and analysis, and feedback and integration with other assessment methods
* The role of CAA in feedback processes
* Wider use of technology to support and enhance assessment
* Technical, operational and support issues.
The authors present a lucid, balanced analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of CAA. This text will appeal to all those involved in higher or further education who wish to model their CAA systems on the best practice available.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to online assessment, 10 Dec 2003
By Bobby Elliott (Erskine, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
There are few books on computer-assisted assessment (CAA) and even fewer that try to provide an overview of the theory and practice of the subject. This book is not a dry academic text on CAA. It's divided into two parts. The first part covers the theory (objective testing, writing questions etc.) and second part deals with implementation issues (CAA technologies, operational issues etc.). So the book provides an ideal introduction to the field for those who are new to it. It's apparent that the authors have practical experience of CAA since the book has a lot of common sense advice (such as an alternative way to measure a question's discrimination rather than the usual statistical measure - which is meaningless to most people).

The price per page ratio is not good. The book is expensive for its size (145 pages). And (inevitably) it's a little out of date (for example, there's very little on item banking). More seriously, because of its small size, the treatment of some topics is light (such as the initial discussion on the theory of assessment).

But (in spite of its price) it's a good, easy to read, introduction to this emerging and important area of education. Recommended.
