5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent and comprehensive guide to Chekhov's work., 27 Oct 2003
After reading Mr. Chamberlain's essay on Michael Chekhov's acting technique in TWENTIETH CENTURY ACTING TRAINING (edited by Alison Hodge), I looked forward to the release of this book with interest. I think it is an excellent introduction to the life and teaching of the man that Stanislavsky called "my most brilliant pupil" and that the great acting teacher Sanford Meisner said "...made me realize that truth as naturalism was far from the truth. In him I witnessed exciting theatrical form with no loss of content, and I know I wanted that too."

The book begins with a concise, yet informative biography of Chekhov, followed by a well considered assessment of his writings on the technique of acting (including lucid explanations of key Chekhovian concepts: Psychological Gesture, The Imaginary Body, Atmosphere, Qualities, Centres, 'the four brothers', and Archetypes), then goes on to examine Chekhov's directing career, including a fascinating glimpse at Chekhov's notes for an adaptation of THE PICKWICK PAPERS that, sadly, was never produced. The final chapter offers detailed descriptions of many of Chekhov's Practical Exercises and ends with suggestions about how to apply his methods to the rehearsal process.

I recommend this book, along with the recently reissued classic TO THE ACTOR, to anyone interested in this provocative and powerful acting technique.
