Product Description

Independent on Sunday

'...clear-headed, intricate and seductive arguments.'

Review

'Clear and level-headed, and has a lot of interesting and provocative things to say about both genetic science and genetic engineering. In particular, he has provided as clear and compelling an account of what is meant by 'playing God', and what is wrong with playing God, as I have seen.' - Stephen Clark, University of Liverpool

'A provocative and always interesting addition to the literature on genetics.' - Arlene Judith Klotzko, Writer in Residence, Science Museum, London.

2.0 out of 5 stars Approach with caution., 6 May 2004
By A Customer
It's hard to tell who this book is aimed at. Readers who come to it entirely innocent of genetics are likely to be systematically misled and misinformed by it, while anyone with any grasp of the subject is likely to throw the book down in frustration at an early stage. A slender popular book is maybe not the place to tackle the big issues about genetics but really there's no excuse for doing the job as badly as Gordon Graham does it in this volume. The examples of Darwinian explanation that Graham offers are (almost without exception) misleading caricatures. The philosophy of biology is a large and ever-growing field, into which Graham seems scarcely to have looked before embarking on this book. His account of evolutionary explanation is deeply confused, his grasp of the mechanism of natural selection is sketchy and he never even bothers to tackle questions like the correct definition of the gene and how competing definitions differ. In short, Graham doesn't seem to have studied even the basics of the field that he's supposedly pronouncing about. The later sections of the book that touch on the moral and social implications of genetics are strikingly better than the early chapters but then that may be because it's only here that Graham has entered territory that he knows something about. So, approach with caution and don't take at face value any assertions made in this book about genes or genetics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth reading, 19 Aug 2002
By C. Nevin (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I thought this was a very good book for understanding the background of the genetics debate. It also provided an excellent overview of the ethical ramifications of what is becoming an increasingly important field.
Mr Graham sets forth the pros and cons to the different sides of various topical questions clearly and with a minimal amount of bias. Whilst I didn't agree 100% with all his 'conclusions', the book made me think and question my own assumptions, which is surely the purpose of books like this.
The writing style also made the book easily readable to the non-academically minded, and on the whole I thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone.
