Product Description

Review

'It is the most detailed, carefully written book on this subject.' - Ursula King, University of Bristol

'Its major strength is to take women's issues seriously but in a way that takes traditional authority within Islam equally seriously and enables a fruitful debate between Muslim men, Muslim women, traditional Islamic learning and western academic discourse.' - Martin Forward, Academic Dean, Wesley House, Cambridge

Product Description

Investigates the ongoing debate, in both the Muslim world and the West, on the position of women in Islam. Illustrates how Islamic perceptions of women and gender relations change in Western Muslim communities.

(REAL NAME)
This book has really contributed to a gap in knowledge about Muslim women in the west. It is clear and coherent and Roald has given utmost attention in making sure that the reader does not get lost in Arabic terminology. This book should be read after reading books of Feminist writers such as Mernissi as it will allow the reader to hear two very different writers on the issue of women in Islam. Anyone who is interested in finding out how Muslim women in the west live should get their hands on this book.
