Product Description

Review
"'Fancy becoming a star hack on a top daily? First of all, buy Richard Keeble's The Newspapers Handbook and practice writing news stories.' - Brendan Montague, Guardian Higher"

Product Description
This is a guide to working as a newspaper journalist. It examines the ever-changing, everyday skills of newspaper reporting and explores the theoretical, ethical, moral and political dimensions of a journalist's job. "The Newspapers Handbook" encourages a critical approach to newspaper practice. Thoroughly rewritten for the third edition and using a range of new examples from tabloid and broadsheet newspapers, non-mainstream and local and regional publications, Richard Keeble examines key journalistic skills such as the art of interviewing, news reporting, reviewing, freelancing and feature writing. Newly updated chapters from Henry Clother, David Northmore and John Turner explore the specialisms of covering the courts, investigative journalism and local government reporting.

5.0 out of 5 stars A handy handbook indeed!, 25 Jul 2003
Richard Keeble's handbook is a gem. Having decided to chart a course as a freelance I found myself somewhat below par in my writing style. This book is helping me to shape my writing for print (I don't know if I can do reviews though!) It includes sections on feature writing (my area), how to structure a news report, effective interviewing for reporters and even a section on freelancing. Plus investigative journalism too! It gives examples of effective writing, nudges the reader into asking relevant questions and generally fills lots of gaps in one's knowledge. One of the best if not the best books on journalism skills I've come across so far and the glossary at the back is superb. Clearly written, top marks.
