Review

'Robert Stern has provided us, at long last, with a very clear, accessible, philosophical introduction to Hegel's prodigious Phenomenology of Spirit (1807) ... Stern's interpretation is distinctive, and yet accessible, useful, and stimulating for students and professionals alike. He quotes and clarifies a good selection of passages which would otherwise puzzle students. His bibliography provides useful references for both beginning and advanced students. Recent Hegel scholarship has made significant advances. In this context, Stern's new introduction is very welcome indeed.' - Kenneth R. Westphal, University of East Anglia

'An admirably clear and helpful introduction to one of the most complex books in the history of philosophy.' - Stephen Houlgate, University of Warwick, UK

'Hegel's - Phenomenology is a formidable text for any first-time student. There is not only Hegel's legendary obscurity to deal with; there are the competing interpretations from more than a century of scholarship. The thread of Ariadne through this labyrinth is Robert Stern's introduction. His exposition is clear, concise and to the point. It cuts through the thicket of scholarly dispute and provides a shrewd and commonsensical reading of the text. This is the best introductory guide to the

'This is a clear introduction to a difficult and great book. Stern gives an original, fresh look at Hegel, that all readers -- novice and expert alike -- will find helpful, insightful, and original.' - Terry Pinkard, Northwestern University

5.0 out of 5 stars a joy!, 28 Feb 2002
By A Customer
Hegel is nortoriously dificult to read, but Robert Stern brings to his understanding of Hegel's philosophy an effortless enthusiasm. Stern makes encountering Hegel a joy, revealing along the way untold subtleties in the text. Ultimately, his achievement serves as no less an accomplishment than the writing of the Phenomenology itself.
