5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant introduction!, 9 Nov 2006
By Michelle Owens "Pizzaanfairytales" (N. Ireland) - See all my reviews

I am a third year philosophy student and although i bought this two years ago I only began a thorough reading this semester for my dissertation on the liberation of animals. Hursthouse is a vegetarian like myself but she critically assesses the main animal liberationists, like Peter Singer and gives great arguments for and against their ideas. This book is a must for ethics students and anyone hoping to convince others of the moral worth of a vegetarian lifestyle. Her approach is strightforward, brilliantly layed out and not in the least bit intimidating!! This sums up the animals rights movement and how to critically assess it in one book !!

5.0 out of 5 stars This Book Really Did Change My Life, 24 Dec 2008
By Mr. S. Dunne - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Whilst studying for my degree in Philosophy, I had to read this book as part of one of my courses.

I was unprepared for the moral dilemma's it caused in my life.

Within a week I was a Vegan...... completely. That was almost five years ago.

Hursthouse cuts through the masses of material out there and presents equal amounts of readings and discussion from all sides of the ethical arguments around human treatment of other animals.

One of the clearest books I have read in any subject, never mind on a Philosophy course, Rosalind Hursthouse has a fine grasp of what it takes to effectively communicate complex ideas to the reader. She assumes you know little philosophical techniques and guides you through analytical reading, be charitable to authors by overlooking trivial errors in their work and ultimately getting to their core message easier.

If I could give this book 6 stars I would. 5 will have to do.
