Product Description

Looks at how drama has its basis in good early years practice using tried and tested examples from traditional stories such as Hansel and Gretel, Cinderella and Humpty Dumpty.

From the Author

Have you wanted to use drama more in early years teaching?
This is a book that looks at how drama has its basis in good early years practice. Most early years practitioners are doing some drama and are edging towards more structured work. This text will help them go further because it is accessible, offering: 16 FULL DRAMAS & MORE THAN 30 STARTING POINTS FROM WHICH TO DEVELOP NEW DRAMAS The book covers a number of key areas where drama is of particular relevance for this age group, including sections on: DRAMA AND THE NATIONAL CURRICULUM// HOW DRAMA CAN HELP YOUR TEACHING IN THE LITERACY HOUR// PERSONAL AND SOCIAL EDUCATION AND CITIZENSHIP// DRAMA AND SPECIAL NEEDS// ASSESSMENT, RECORDING LAND PROGRESSION The tried and tested example dramas are based on traditional stories. In the dramas themselves there is progression for teachers and pupils, moving from simple use of Teacher in Role (TiR) to more complex, full dramas. Tradiional stories used include: Little Bo Peep, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Humpty Dumpty, The Pied Piper, The Billy Goats' Gruff and Hansel and Gretel.

5.0 out of 5 stars An extremely practical book for primary school teachers, 14 April 2001
By A Customer
It is very difficult to find good quality books focussing upon using drama with young children. This book certainly addresses that void. It gives step by step lesson plans with relevant national curriculum referencing and it is so obvious that the lessons have been tried and tested. There are also interesting chapters explaining the thinking behind the practice with good examples which all teachers will recognise. I have used many of the lesson ideas from this book with great success at the Foundation Stage and at both Key Stages 1 and 2. I have also recommended it wholeheartedly to colleagues who render nothing but praise. This is a book written by teachers for teachers and, consequently, a very useful resource.

5.0 out of 5 stars drama and traditional story for the early years, 15 April 2006

I thought this was an excellent resource for both experienced and inexperienced drama teachers. It is hard to find materials for the youngest children so this was a delight to recieve. The ideas are clear and structured and very easy to follow. The ideas are also easy to adapt and develop to suit the specific needs of a class.
