5.0 out of 5 stars Access to a 'hidden world', 1 Jan 2009
In this remarkable book, Diana Gittins takes us beyond the walls and locked doors which segregated those living and/or working in Severalls Psychiatric Hospital from the rest of the community. Dr Gittins' detailed account of the day to day lives of patients and workers over the 84 years of the hospital's existence, provides a unique social history of 20th century psychiatry and its changing attitudes and approaches. It is also a uniquely human-scale account, meticulous research being combined with the memories and narratives of many people who lived and worked in Severalls, in some cases for most of their lives.
I never fail to be both moved and educated by this book, which I have borrowed from the library more times than I can count. Ironic that a book which succeeds so brilliantly at making the inaccessible accesible, should itself be made inaccessible by its extortionate price. Come on publishers and distributors - you've got a gem here. Everyone should read it - so give them a chance!
