Product Description

Review
'Written in a clear, immensely readable, systematic style, - Lacan and the Political demonstrates that Lacanian psychoanalysis does have precise political consequences: it involves a theory of the political which firmly endorses the stance of radical democracy. Stavrakakis' book is much more than an important contribution to the ongoing debate: it redefines its very terms.'

'Lacan and the Political provides both a thorough and clear presentation of the basic Lacanian concepts and the most insightful and innovative attempt so far to apply them to the study of contemporary social and political phenomena.' - Ernesto Laclau, University of Essex

Product Description
Yannis Stavrakakis examines Lacan's challenging views on time, history, language, alterity, desire and sexuality from a political standpoint.

First Sentence
Having drawn the attention of the reader to the problems involved and the precautions the are necessary in any project linking Lacanian theory and the political (problems that stem both from the difficulties entailed in all attempts at bringing together psychoanalysis and the political and from the particular status of Lacanian theory), but also having sketched some of the gains anticipated from such an enterprise - and after the brief summary of contents and Lacan's biography with which my introduction came to a conclusion - it is now time to start our exploration of Lacanian theory and its relevance for socio-political analysis, especially for a theory of the political. Read the first page

5.0 out of 5 stars A well written book on psychoanalysis and politics, 15 Mar 2001
By A Customer
Stavrakaki's book on J.Lacan, gives a very good interpretation and link of psychoanalysis with political analysis through an easily read and well-structured writing of Lacan's 'baroque and complicated style'. His book is very useful especially for people that are just being introduced to the psychoanalytic perspective of J.Lacan and its relation to the 'political'. In the first three chapters he gives a full explanation and interpretation of the Lacanian subject and object as well as their impossible dialectic. Very well described and illustrated without any gaps or misinterpretations of the Lacanian theory. Very instructive and plausible to any political researcher. Following that from the third to fifth part of the book he gives a full account of the link between psychoanalysis and matters related to politics, democracy, social movements, ecology and the phenomenon of advertising. 'Lacan and the Political' is a very instructive book and the discussion of widely political issues makes it more interesting and pleasant to the reader. A must read!
