Product Description

Product Description

A lucid introduction to the nature of good reasoning and how to test and construct good arguments. It assumes no prior knowledge of logic or philosophy. The book includes an accessible introduction to basic symbolic logic.

From the Author

To help people reason better
The aim is to enable people to reason better themselves and deal with arguments more effectively when they encounter them. And this is important because argument is the chief way of determining the truth. Without it we risk being unthinking slaves to whatever views happen to come our way. You know that argument is important when you reflect on how so many different entrenched institutions have tried so hard so often to stop it. I hope this handy book helps people to think for themselves.

5.0 out of 5 stars On the contrary: not disappointing., 3 Jun 2007

The previous review is odd. This is a book I have recommended to undergraduates, and I would do so again. Feedback has been positive. It is written carefully, rather than excessively formally, and is certainly accessible to students. What's more, I recommend it to you, too.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 27 Jan 2004
This book was very disappointing. It's layout is very formal, as is the language used. I was looking for a text to use for teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students, but don't really think it's suitable. It's far from accessible and much more like a formal philosophical treatise. Maybe I wasn't the target audience?
