From the Back Cover

From Birth to Five Years: Children's Developmental Progress

Mary D. Sheridan

Revised and updated by Ajay Sharma and Helen Cockerill

From Birth to Five Years, based on the pioneering work of Mary Sheridan, has become a classic guide to the developmental progress of pre-school children. It is widely recognised as an invaluable reference for professionals training or working in health, education and social care.

Features of this completely revised edition include:

  • Charts describing key stages in the development of motor, perception, communication, play, independence and social skills, updated in the light of recent research and supported by over 120 illustrations
  • Information on what we know about how children develop.
  • A new section on the development of attention and self-regulation
  • Guidelines for the assessment of children through observation and interaction
  • Advice on when to refer to specialist services

Guidance is offered on ages at which children typically achieve key stages, whilst recognising individual variation in the rate of development and the influence of the child’s environment. Based on an ethos of health promotion and the need for a common assessment framework the book will be welcomed by all those who work with infants and young children.

Mary D. Sheridan carried out pioneering work in the field of community paediatrics for over 40 years.

Ajay Sharma is a Consultant Community Paediatrician in Southwark, London

Helen Cockerill is a Consultant Speech and Language Therapist, working at the Evelina Children’s Hospital in London.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good book for child carers., 11 Mar 2000
By A Customer
I first read this book whilst doing my NNEB at college. As a nursery nurse this book was invaluable to help with assessing child development, but now as a mother I feel it would probably worry me as if my son didn't reach the goal by the date set by Mary Sheridan, you start worrying! Overall, although informative, I feel this is a book for professional child-carers more than parents.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional, 16 April 2004
Sherdian's offering is a brilliant book and can act as a guide for childcare students and professionals. It covers the various stages of development from birth to five and also takes children with disabilities into account towards the end of the book.

I have used her book as a nursery nurse student and when at university part of my course and will still continue to use her book.

A must read/buy for everyone. You will not need another book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Birth to five years
This book is good guide to refer to and revise age appropriate behaviour. I found it usefull but not enough on its own.
