3.0 out of 5 stars Jargon bonanza, 9 April 2007
This book has many merits: It is, as the title suggests, comprehensive. It does contain lots of exercises that actually do test your understanding (unlike some other texts). I cannot fault it in terms of the wide range of vocabulary it introduces in a somewhat hand-wavvy manner - of course a reader of basic grammar knows the word for "sea-gull". The chief flaw of this text is that its claim to be "jargon free" is a claim worthy of a politician; unless the words "complement of manner" or "coverb" trip lightly from your tongue. Most of the terms used to describe the language are ill-fitted to giving the foreigner an understanding a prescription as to the accurate use. In conclusion, while the book is a more thorough and exhaustive examination of grammar than say the Schaum Outline, it is a book written by linguist, not by a teacher.
That being said, buy it anyway. Mandarin is difficult enough to require the student to read any and all books available.
