4.0 out of 5 stars Rethinking Careers Education and Guidance, 17 May 2003
By A Customer
Having been directed to this book as essential reading for my part-time Masters course I found it daunting at first: so much information, so little time! For the uninitiated into career guidance, this is heavy going. Even for the expert there's a lot to wade through and it takes time, patience and a certain amount of note-taking to get the best of it. Bed-time reading it isn't! It's also a little dated in a field which changes so quickly, with most of the content written in 1996. Having said that, after 11 years working in career guidance I felt this had a lot to say to me about the context, values, policies, underpinning theories and practice of guidance. Studying it properly has made me think more carefully about my own practice and made me appreciate - and enjoy - my own work far more. This is the only book on the market which brings together all the information you really need to know to put the work of UK career guidance into context. If you have the time to work through this book, the principles and history presented in it will enlighten and inspire you (though you will have to supply the updates from your own experience and read it critically to bring it up to date.) I thoroughly recommend it.
