5.0 out of 5 stars beautiful and profound, 11 May 2007
For me, this book was an accessible introduction to Heidegger. I found his 'basic writings' beautiful and profound - I felt like I was having epiphany after epiphany reading this book and for that reason I don't think I'll ever forget it. His thought is like poetry - it blurs the boundaries between literature and philosophy - and for me it answers many 'world problems'. It also helped me understand and clarify my thoughts on Baudrillard's postmodernism, Lacan's meconaissance, Kristeva's 'sacred', Sartre's bad faith, Derrida's deconstruction, Marxist false consciousness etc - so if you want a grounding in postmodernism and existentialism read this book! Along with Nietzsche's 'The Birth of Tragedy', I would probably place this book among the biggest ever influences on my intellectual development. I cannot stress the importance of Heidegger's thought enough, especially in this age when nothing is sacred... I think Heidegger is particularly important for writers and artists.... but I wont even try to explain why, because whenever I try to put it into words I feel like I'm belittling his thought, which must be 'dwelt with' by reading this book.
