5.0 out of 5 stars Essential for any Industrial Designer, 20 Mar 2004
By Richard Stowey "Designer" (Bristol, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
So what if this book was written in 1986. The topics covered within design and culture from the mid-1800's up until the books release are still as relavent to the Industrial Designer as they were back then. The book looks at how the arts, crafts and applied arts intertwine with industry and manufacturing and how they are relavent to those people who worked within the industry.

The book documents a broad outline of the key figures, events and notions leading up to the definition of the designer for industry. I believe that this is one of the best books about industrial design i have read. The author, Penny Sparke, clearly outlines in the opening chapter what she means by design and culture, style and fashion, and uses the outlines within as a basis for the rest of the book.

I think the words of the author herself describe the book best: "In the end this book is only a framework, but an important framework none the less. It serves to contextualize design not for academic purposes alone but also for designers themselves to see their task in perspective and to question some of the narrow assumptions they have inherited about their cultural role in this century" - page 207.

For me, the two hundred and eight readable pages accompanied by an exhaustive glossary of important designers and proper names and a full reference list, is a grand eye opener to the cultural and design history which has gone before me and my work and a superb starting point on the subject. The book isn't light reading and you probably won't hurt your head from too much babble, and the pages are crammed pretty full with information. Much of the content is explained extremely well and many key movements and people are included.

I would go as far as to say that this book should be essential reading for anyone wanting to practice as an industrial designer, and the content will keep you busy for many more reads than the first. The content is well put together and will surely open your eyes.
