Product Description

Product Description
Castleden suggests that there is no one `meaning' or `purpose' for Stonehenge, that from its very beginning it has filled a variety of needs.

From the Back Cover
Every generation has created its own interpretation of Stonehenge, rarely reflecting the realities of the prehistoric past. In The Making of Stonehenge, Rodney Castleden argues that Stonehenge held many meanings for the people who built it, and that key symbolic gestures were carefully reproduced in successive phases proving cultural continuity over surprisingly long periods. What emerges is a fuller understanding than has ever been available before. Every generation has had its own view of Stonehenge, but rarely do these interpretations reflect the physical, ecological, economic and social realities of the prehistoric past. Rodney Castleden begins with those elements which made possible the building of the imposing stone circle: the site, the materials and the society that undertook the enormous task of developing the monument to a carefully conceived plan. What emerges from this detailed examination is a much fuller sense of Stonehenge in prehistory, both in relation to contemporary sites close by, and in terms of the varied uses to which it was put. Castleden argues that from its very beginning Stonehenge held many meanings for the people who built it, that it acquired new layers of symbolism with time, and that architectural cross references were deliberately built into it to strengthen its power. He also suggests that key symbolic gestures were carefully reproduced or recalled in successive development phases, proving cultural continuity over surprising long periods. The Romans saw it as a centre of resistance; the antiquaries of the seventeenth century `rediscovered' it as a key to Britain's remote past; the National Trust and English Heritage view it as a tourist trap fraught with problems; UNESCO, declaring it a World Heritage Site, sees it as the cultural inheritance of the whole of humanity. There is a danger of losing sight of the ancient reality: a landmark, temple and trysting-place of central importance to the prehistoric tribe who built it. This book seeks to recover that ancient tribal achievement and its meaning.

4.0 out of 5 stars The author adds well-informed colour to the Stonehenge story, 7 Nov 1998
By A Customer
A good read and a thorough description of the archaeology of Stonehenge and its environs. The perspective also covers much more about the people who made Stonehenge and what we can infer about them, which adds colour to the archaeology. Unlike the colour added by conjecture and speculation, however, this author draws on the academic studies and theorems of modern archaeology. Readable but still authentic - a good combination for those who want more than the Stonehenge guidebook.
