Product Description

Product Description

At present there is no book that deals with the whole range of approaches to the transpersonal in counselling and psychotherapy. The transpersonal approach has become of much more interest recently because of the impact of Ken Wilber's work. His map of psychospiritual development has been very influential. Psychology and spirituality are now linked in a very convincing way, where one grows out of the other, distinct but connected. John Rowan has maintained an interest in the transpersonal for the past twenty years, and his many successful books reveal a transpersonal concern. This is the first time, however, he has devoted an entire book to the subject. The book is unique in providing the first comprehensive account of the transpersonal as it applies to psychotherapy and counselling. Rowan shows where the idea comes from, how it has developed, how it can be used. The book is intensely practical and refers back constantly to what the psychotherapist or counsellor actually does in the area of the transperson. At the same time it is theoretically rich and deals with some of the most contentious issues with which the transpersonal practitioner has to contend.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is for counsellors and psychotherapists to help them., 23 April 1999
By A Customer
The object of this book is to put on the map an area of work in psychotherapy and counselling which is inadequately treated in most of the existing training texts. Many therapists are already using transpersonal ideas in their work, but sometimes not realising where they come from or much about their scope and limits. This is the first book to put together material from all the different sources which have contributed to our understanding of this fascinating area.

5.0 out of 5 stars Giving meaning to the unstructured, 19 Nov 2004
I am pursuing an integrative path in Psychotherapy - particularly following Clarkson's 5 Relationship model. My understanding was typically that 'transpersonal' equated to 'everything that does not neatly fit into the other relationships'.
John Rowan's has enabled me to put my experience of the transpersonal into some sort of order - to give meaning to what felt chaotic to me but is naturally unstructured.
He confidently covers a wide range of phenomena, separating the transpersonal from other forms, showing linkages and subtle ties.
If you are floundering in the shallows of the supernatural aspects of Psychotherapy, this book will help you to wade purposefully - and you may even be brave enough to swim out deeper.
