5.0 out of 5 stars Well written & accessible...surely not an academic book?, 6 Mar 2000
By A Customer
Fiske's book is widely used by media students but is accessible to anyone due to the style of his writing. In my studies I have found Fiske to be incisive in dealing with all aspects of popular culture. If you want to learn more about television and audiences of popular culture then I would invest in this little gem - it has remained one one my best academic buys.

Also see his earlier 'Understanding Television' (1978, I think) co-written with John Hartley.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good, essential for any media studies, 17 May 2001
Anybody studying the media or popular culture should not be without this book. John Fiske describes the many aspects of how television influences our lives, and discusses many ideas in how television is produced. Apspects of popular culture surrounding televisoin such as post-modernism are discussed and written in a style that doesn't try to confuse you, which is appropriate of a lot of academic readings

4.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable for thinking about how television is produced and perceived., 8 Jul 2009
By Script Angel (Solihull, England) - See all my reviews
A must-read for any media studies student, and an interesting insight for writers who want to think about how fiction is perceived by television audiences. It's also delivered in a very accessible style and is academic enough to be thought-provoking but readable for the layman.
