5.0 out of 5 stars A book of impressive originality, 1 Dec 1998
By A Customer
Not only did Levin's book represent one of the first most notable contributions on the senses from within philosophy, it made an impressive attempt at providing an alternative sensory epistemological model above and beyond the privileging of a particular visuality in Western history. The question arises of whether to privelege an alternative sense such as hearing or to look for alternatives within the visual, to state that vision is not essentially oppressive. Levin in this and other work has done both of these and has demonstrated a refreshing belief that humans could emancipate themselves if they'd only stop and recall the (sensory) history of where they have arrived. In terms of the senses Levin demonstrates that there are numerous creative possibilities for re-organising self and society. My only critique (and that is surely the wrong word) is that he could have teased out more the ecological consequences of his argument, the question of our relation to nature and other species.
